As I’m sitting here trying to figure out how to encapsulate the awesomeness that is this movie into words, I find myself fighting the temptation to geek out and spoil every awesome moment of the movie. There are sooooooo many awesome moments too. Anyway the point is that Marvel’s The Avengers was everything I wanted it to be and a little more.

First off I want to go ahead and let you guys know that Joss Whedon, who co-wrote and directed this movie, is the f’n man! Seriously, all of the Whedon haters will be recanting their negative statements about him after seeing this flick. Avengers is so well written and directed that it’s hard to believe that this is only his second time directing a feature film. The only other movie that he’s directed was the Firefly feature film “Serenity”. Whedon proves that he’s adept at ensemble storytelling with how he moves the story forward and the obligatory fight scenes never feel inorganic.

In case you’ve been living under a rock. Marvel’s The Avengers is the culmination of four years worth of super-hero movies, starting with 2008’s Iron Man and ending with last year’s Captain America. Basically this movie is about getting all of these Marvel heroes together in one movie in order to fight a threat that is so big that none of them could tackle it as individuals. I could get more detailed with the plot here but honestly you don’t need to know anything more than what I just told you.

So the Avengers team consists of Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), The Black Widow (Scarlett Johanssen), and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). All of these actors are spot on with their character’s portrayals and not once did I ever feel like there was a weak link among the group. Ruffalo was actually the actor that surprised me most seeing as how he’s the third guy to play The Hulk in roughly a nine year time span. I expected Ruffalo to just be a fill in actor to go through the motions until we get to see the big green guy tear some stuff up, but this wasn’t the case at all. Ruffalo was able to portray the struggle and acceptance that a guy who is burdened with all of this unwanted power would experience. I feel like he did better than Edward Norton and Eric Bana in this regard, and it really helps the audience get a feel for what makes Bruce Banner tick.

Now while there may be great characterization in this movie, everyone knows that you go see big blockbusters for the action and the non-stop explosions and this movie doesn’t skimp on that stuff at all. The action choreography in this movie is so dope. I spent the whole time in awe that I was watching team up scenarios and fight scenes that I’ve grown up reading about in comics, come to life in front of my eyes. It’s something that I never thought I’d see and I’m still a bit in shock at the fact that I have seen it. If action is what you’re looking for, The Avengers delivers in spades.

For really though, go see this damn movie. If you don’t like this movie then you probably have issues and I’ll pray for you, but I’m willing to say that 98% of the people that see this thing will either like it, love it, or completely loose their mind over how utterly awesome it is.
